CN is testing two main line diesel-electric locomotives fueled principally by LNG (liquefied natural gas) in revenue service in northern Alberta, Canada.

The units are testing on the 300-mile run north of Edmonton to Fort McMurray, the rail gateway to the oil sands region of northern Alberta. CN retrofitted the diesel engines in two 3,000-horsepower Electro-Motive Diesel SD40-2 locomotives to run on LNG using conversion kits supplied by Energy Conversions Inc. (ECI) of Tacoma, Wash. The retrofitted locomotives, using 90% natural gas, with 10% diesel fuel for ignition, are paired with an LNG fuel tender—a specially equipped and protected tank car—between them. The tender, a former Union Pacific tank car, was upgraded by a unit of Chart Industries, Inc., New Prague, Minn.

After reading this article with the picture of these units, I wanted to build my own CN LNG train.

Tank car:
I used an Atlas 20700 gallon tank car as the base for the LNG tender. With styrene I build a new saddle to have the look of the prototype. After some sanding the new saddle fit nearly perfectly on the tank car. Then I created the pipes and attached them with GMM lift rings to the car.

Now it was time to apply the colours and decals.

Engine:
I used two Kato SD40-2 and two Kato SD45 shells to get the flared radiators and two Kaslo Shops NC-4 wide cabs for the prototypical view. Other parts used:
- Kaslo Shops NC-4 wide cab
- BLMA grab irons
- BLMA Fan grilles
- BLMA Lift rings
- BLMA MU hoses
- BLMA Rear fan grab iron
- BLMA Trainline Air Hoses
- GMM Lift rings
- GMM Sun shades
- GMM Windshield wipers
- Atlas Plow
- Miniature by Eric Bell
- Miniature by Eric Break wheel stand
- Trainworks Cut lever
- Schaer Sinclair antennas

Now I have my own CN LNG train.

Cheers,

Markus

Markus,

inspired by your post, a friend of mine asked me to built such a tankcar for him, what i did. Below are some pictures of the model, i copied most of your modeling technics, i just used some putty to close the gaps of the new saddle and used etched walkways:

In April 2015, CN introduced 4 new LNG fuel tenders. CN using converted and heavily modified Thrall-type well cars for this purpose.
Canadian National has been exploring the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel locomotives instead of diesel. The benefits are: longer operating distances between locomotive fueling stops, reduced fuel usage and fewer greenhouse-gas emissions, and meeting U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's stringent Tier 4 air emission standards. Locomotive builders Electro-Motive Diesel (EMD) and GE Transportation are trying to develop or tweak engine kits that would enable existing high-horsepower units to support dual-fuel operations (via diesel or LNG) or run predominantly on LNG. Fuel Tender-car manufacturers are aiming to design or tailor the cars that would be positioned between locomotives to carry LNG. CN's were partially built by NRE and CN, using Thrall Well cars as the base.

The photo taken in April 2015 in Neenah, WI, is courtesy of Henry Nye.

As I read the above article and have seen these new LNG fuel tenders in the May issue of Canadian Railway Observations (CRO) Website (http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/), I wished to have one of them and there was only one way to get one: build it by yourself.

I hope, this project will inspire you as well as the previous one

Cheers,

Markus
