wow ! a whole month passed since the last work report. but this doesn't mean i was lazy in that time. the opposite is true.
did a lot of work in the garden. spent a week in portugal. more work done in the garden. built some benchwork. laid some track.
so here we go. first i continued building the benchwork for the spirals and the ramp up to the "summit siding". named because it will be the highest point on my layout (at least for the tracks). then there will be one siding for each of the two main lines. this will give me the possibility to store a string of cars or use the siding to pass an train travelling in the opposite direction but on the same main. there will be crossovers from main1-main2 and main2-main1 on each end of the sidings. some of the turnouts have already switch machines installed. i use cheap servos from ebay controlled via tamvalley servo decoders.
here's the ramp leading up from the spirals. it features a central short siding for 1-2 sets of helper units. can be accessed from both mains.
further up the hill...
even further...
first half of the summit siding...
crossovers....
the longer of the two sidings will most likely hold a 80-car train with 4-5 engines. the shorter approx 65-75 cars. the right side of the siding has not been built yet. needs a few thoughts as i'm not sure yet how the remaining of the layout will look like. both mainlines have to descend to the lower level again. not sure yet how i will achieve this. there's not enough room left for another set of spirals. maybe i build an oval helix inside a mountain. we'll see.
